Problems connecting to Ameritech.net dsl

Is anybody out there connected to Ameritech.net via dsl. I am having
problems. I was sent an external modem, which I understand is a
speedstream6290 though I haven't had anybody to read me the actual
printing on the modem or the materials that came with it. I was told that
the isp setup was pppoe. I am runnig a 2.4.9 kernel but chose to use the
pppoe package from debian (roaring penguin) without kernel enabling since
this is till experimental. I made the changes in pap-secrets and
dsl-provider according to the pppoe documentation. I symlinked
ppp_on_boot.dsl with ppp_on_boot, after I had moved the actual file that
then existed in ppp_on_boot (these were the debian instructions for
setup). I ran the tests of the nic card plugged into the modem as
sugested in the dsl howto, and got all packets received. However, when I
tried to connect, I was unsuccessful as shown by the syslog and plog
examples below. If I run pppoe by itself, it does go through both
discovery and session phases. This is all new to me and I am probably
leaving out something glaringly obvious, but any help would be
appreciated. Ameritech, of course, is of no help; they assured me that
their service was linux-compatible though not supported when I signed up,
but now techsupport is saying they don't support and have no intention of
supporting in the future anything but win95,98, etc. and my account is
marked as win2000--because that's how tey originally told me they mark all
linux accounts so they get the external modem. Sorry about the extra
gripe! Here are the excerpts from plog and syslog.
