I was not talking about Speakup. Right now the only way that the SuSE-BLinux people can think of allowing a daemon (which by its very nature has no standard input) to get at keypresses is to have a kernel patch such as key-sniff which is available on leb.net/pub/blinux. The reason why the main SuSE company would not dream of having key-sniff or similar in their standard is that their distribution is used by multinational corporations and loads of security-conscious people. Now what does a keyboard sniffer do? It allows a user level program to see what is being typed. Fine, so let some hacker break into a system, install a program that transmits all data that is being typed back to the hacker. I consider this to be a security hole. This is an exageration, but maybe you can understand why SuSE has some concerns about making a keyboard sniffer part of their standard Linux kernel.
