I'm using a fairly recent (5.4) kernel from debian and haven't been having any issue with virtio-gpu so far. Changelogs says around 2.8 virtio-gpu was added. Do you use something else besides it? How do you run qemu? The "supported" way is to use runqemu which uses a json config file as args to qemu. Might want to try out VBox as an alternative to virtio-gpu for the time being.
