Thanks for the insight, Luke. My plan is to dual boot for now. I'm not brave enough to completely abandon Windows right away :) Although, I can always run windows in a VM during the transition to keep it painless. I have a fakeRAID 5 array set up in windows, but I'm having trouble accessing it under Ubuntu. I'm using the ICH8/9 controller on my motherboard. The File Browser shows the 2000 GB media, but when try to use it, I get a message that says: > > > > Cannot mount volume > > Detailes: $MFTMirr does not match $MFT (record 0). Failed to mount '/dev/sda1': input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or you have hardware faults, or you have a SofrtRAID/FakeRAID hardware. ... If you have SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first you must activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvida_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for the details. > > If you are installing Ubuntu onto a system that is not deual booting with any other operating system, I strongly suggest you use Linux Software RAID instead. Linux Software RAID is at least in my opinion, more stable, offers dynamic rebuilding of arrays should a disk fail, and is a lot more flexible. Should a dmraid array fail on you, Linux will not easily let you rebuild and recover your data, since at least in Ubuntu 8.10, you cannot monitor the array to determine whether a disk has failed. > > Having said that, there have been a few issues with dmraid and Intel Software RAID in Ubuntu 8.10, and an update will hopefully be landing in the coming wek to aleviate, if not entirely fix the problems users are having. > > Luke Windows Live™: E-mail.
