On further checking I found out it dmraid -ay is working with the new kernel but it stops working after logging into gnome desktop. So gnome must be doing something to the device mappings that is causing the error. If instead of logging into gnome the first time if you use control-alt-f1 to switch to a text terminal and login as root dmraid works. After a user logs in to gnome (even root user) dmraid stops working in that same text terminal, giving the kernel error:
