No, I wasn't using dmraid, I was using the ataraid kernel module along with the medley kernel module (got the 2.4.32-rc1 source from kernel.org, compiled it with those modules).   Does dmraid work under a 2.4 kernel?

Tried that, there were no HPA or Host Protected Area messages.
