Promise PDC20276 (yet again)

Hi,

I've searched the archives about the PDC20276, but haven't seen a problem similar to mine...

I've got a RAID 1 (mirror) array with 2 x Seagate 80gb Baracude V's up and running with Debian 3.0 (woody) and a Promise PDC20276 controller. Getting this far was long and complicated, but now I have the 2.4.20 kernel with ataraid and pdc202xx drivers compiled in (not modules). I can boot off the array when I set /dev/ataraid/d0p1 in LILO etc... however every time I change something things seem to break, and I'm not sure RAID is running correctly at all.

A couple of questions:

Can I repartition disks once they're in the RAID mirror? I saw mention somewhere that you shouldn't do this, though I think it was referring to the software raid driver (md).

Can I install new kernels and use lilo to install them while running the array, I'm using LILO 22.2?

Both times I've tried these things it's resulted in LILO being unable to boot at all. The last time I started up I just got scrolling "01 01 01" across/down the screen forever. Once previously I got a LILO error (that I can't remember). Note these problems occur before LILO says "loading linux" and thus I can't just boot the old kernel and fix the problem. I can fix it by plugging in the disks separately on the standard IDE controller, working out which one is broken, and then mirroring it onto the other drive with the Promise BIOS, and rebooting. The last time I did this I realised the packages I had installed were no longer present and the new kernel labels I had inserted were also completely absent - it was as if the ataraid driver had only been writing to one drive, and then when I wrote to the boot sector with lilo it broke it completely because the drives had different boot sectors.

Having had to endure 4 re mirrors (using the Promise BIOS, each taking about 2 hours) so far, I'm running out of ideas as to the cause of these problems. I'm new to RAID on Linux, am I missing something obvious?

Thanks for your time,
Bede Jordan
