Actually it is fairly easy -- use the "config" from the stock kernel to start with, then make your modifications to that. The key is to keep the modules set up correctly. I have done this with both SuSE and RH. Although I have fewer problems with SuSE. I now have 4 120 gig drives on a couple of servers in striped mirror, running ReiserFS and they are screamers.. (one is SuSE and the other RH).
