Suggestion:flavors of Linux RAID

Lets define some terms:

Hardware RAID - "pure" HW RAID, like the big SCSI boys, 3Ware, and
Adaptec 2400 give you. One characteristic of such devices is that they
have their own RAM, as well as being able to do RAID-5. Linux devices
are /dev/something. Perhaps this could be called "unassisted HW RAID"

Software RAID - "pure" Linux "Multiple Devices" RAID, where you have
/etc/raidtab and your devices are /dev/mdX

ATARAID as its own category, or maybe we could call it "hardware
assisted RAID" or "CPU assisted RAID", where you need a RAID chip on
your motherboard or PCI card, which can do RAID 0 and/or 1, and
typically has no onboard RAM.

Just a suggestion. When one claims that the HPT370 or Promise FastTrak
is "software RAID" its not entirely true, but neither is it valid to
call it "hardware RAID".
