Difference ion speed between HW and SW RAID

So this brings up the question, couldn't find this in the archives.
How much faster is a ATA-HW RAID vs. a ATA-SW RAID?
With RAID 0?
RAID 5?

Why go SW RAID over HD?

TIA

Subject: Re: question about hardware raid 1 (IDE)

No - I don't believe anyone has stated that. The following are
HARDWARE-BASED IDE raid cards that are known to work well:

* Escalade Series (5000-7000)
* Adaptec 2400a (i2o based)
* Promise Supertrack

The Fasttrack and highpoints are NOT hardware-based raids. They use the
drivers for their intelligence.
