problems with booting

hi!
just compiled a patched 2.4.12-xfs-ataraid kernel
now i can partition my array using /dev/ataraid/disc0/disc (i'm using devfs)
then i create xfs-partitions ... the root-partition is /dev/ataraid/disc0/part1
i can even mount the partitions & copy data on them.
so i copied a whole root-fs onto the first partition.

now i wanna boot off the raid0-array-partition1 (using grub), but it says it can't find a root partition (gave the kernel the root=/dev/ataraid/disc0/part1)
even tried with the other names (d0p1), doesn't work either.

as mentioned, kernel boots off fine (i'm using a temporary non-raid disk to boot grub & the kernel), but it can't mount the rootfs.
is it a xfs-related issue?
what am i doing wrong?

please help
greetings
  Martin
