Yes, but this does not happen when moving a package from AUR to the
official repositories. For example in the case of the package we are
talking about there is no git history [1] since it stayed in the AUR
[2].

However that could be a very good solution, always move the git
repository from the AUR when a package is promoted and vice versa (move
the git from the official repository to the AUR) when the package is
left without maintainer.
