I did a system upgrade a few days ago, that I had been delaying for a
few weeks.  Probably nearly 300 packages got upgraded, including the
kernel, pipewire, etc.  Since then, I keep having a recurrent problem
with audio distortion, which I haven't been able to pin down a cause for.

To start out, the audio is fine, using my ear bug headphones with my
laptop's audio jack.  Then, after a few minutes, suddenly audio
distortion kicks in.  It happens when using both streaming music
(audacious) as well as voice (zoom).  I seem to be able to "clear it
out" by temporarily turning off my current audio profile in the
pavucontrol app, and then re-enabling it.  But the distortion just
returns again after a few minutes.  I've tried different headphones,
switching to laptop speakers, etc., but I still get the distortion.

I haven't been able to figure out which component or configuration
setting is causing it, and haven't seen any currently open bug reports
or any mentions in the Arch forums or here on the mailing list that
describe anything similar.  Has anyone else been experiencing anything
like this and/or know what the cause or solution might be?

My laptop configuration is:
* linux 6.4.1.arch2-1
* pipewire 1:0.3.72-1 (with pipewire-alsa, pipewire-audio, and
pipewire-pulse also installed)
* wireplumber 0.4.14-1
* audio hardware:  "Tiger Lake-LP Smart Sound Technology Audio
Controller Speaker + Headphones"
* selected audio profile:  "Play HiFi quality music"

Thanks,

DR

Hi,

I can't comment on {aur,chaotic-aur}/zoom. At the peak of the pandemic,
I took part in some training courses, some of which were conducted via
Zoom. I didn't do this with my Arch Linux PC, but with an iPad Pro. At
first I refused to install the app and tried Zoom from different web
browsers. This was a total disaster when it came to audio. I ended up
using the app and although it worked better, it was still no fun in
terms of audio. It wasn't ok with the iPad's internal audio thingy, let
alone a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd generation. This was without
streaming music at the same time. It made my hair stand on end when I
read Zoom related to audio issues.

If you use Zoom by a web browser, try whatever is provided by the AUR or
the chaotic-aur repository.

Regards,
Ralf

You can try to use the Arch Linux Archive to pinpoint around when this started
happening, which might help you narrow it down.

By turning off I assume you use pavucontrol to set it to off.

Try using the pro audio profile. Also, make sure you don't have any
pipewire/wireplumber configuration that could be causing issues.

Hi!

I experienced exactly this for a long time using pipewire/wireplumber...
since who knows when. Distortion in my case was constant, even when an
idle desktop (sway), but became extremely and *uncomfortably* noticeable
in Firefox. It became so frustrating (and I couldn't find any solution)
that I ended up migrating to PulseAudio altogether.

I came to the (unproven) suspicion that it's something related to my
card (an integrated Intel Corporation 7 Series/C216) and with how
PipeWire emulates PulseAudio...
