    my understanding is that checkupdates -d is equivalent to 
    pacman -Sywu && pacman -Su . I haven't read checkupdates 
    manual page. It could be that other then a safe upgrade 
    it does additional work.

I still haven't read checkupdates manual page. Rereading mpan, who is the 
author of the message I responded to, message, I should have wrote that 
my understanding is that checkupdates -d is equivalent to pacman -Sywu . 
Not to pacman -Sywu && pacman -Su .
