I just happened to look for same information not so long ago. There will be no major differences when 1.3 will be out, for reference see: http://wiki.qemu.org/ChangeLog/1.3#KVM So it seems, that as long as you do not use PCI device assignment, 1.2 should work for you as well, but I haven't tested it (I wait for 1.3).
