The piece of software you mean are the acpi drivers (please correct
me), written to work on a lucky percentage of hardware. I guess they
are part of the kernel package. Heard of this kind of issue first when
I started with linux 3 years ago. There might be modified drivers
which could work for you. Maybe google will turn something up about
Toshiba Satellite U500 and linux.
