Eg, when you type 'http://myhome.westell.com' into the address bar in your browser, your computer (and any other computers you want to be able to access the server) must be able to turn that address into an IP address. SOHO routers often push domain suffixes that aren't actually correct from a DNS point of view. For instance, if I try to look up myhome.westell.com, I get told that it doesn't exist. However, it may be valid inside your own network, in which case you can use it just fine as long you don't want external users to access it. In windows, you can test if a name is resolvable from your computer by opening a command shell (Start -> Run -> cmd), and trying to ping the host (ping myhome.westell.com).
