RE: compiling a portable Apache build for Linux

Is there a patch available to do such a thing and if so can you point me to it please? I've looked through the patches on http://www.apache.org/dist/httpd/patches but haven't found anything pertinent.

I think you'd have to patch the server, not just recompile it.
