If redirection in mod_proxy_balance does not work this way, what is the preferred way to smoothly fade out an instance?

I don't know.
Hi Juergen.
You may want to have a look at using the mod_jk Apache/Tomcat connector, rather than mod_proxy_balancer and mod_proxy_ajp. It also does load-balancing, sticky sessions etc.. and since mod_jk has been there for quite a while longer than mod_proxy_ajp, it may contain a wider set of options to achieve more or less what you want.

Switching from mod_proxy to mod_jk is not a major undertaking, since the underlying protocols etc.. are the same (AJP), and there exists considerable expertise on this list and on the Tomcat users list to help, should you have any problems.
