Hallo List,

i have astrange problem with my apache.
I try to describe it in a short wy:

There are 2 debian etch servers with apache + libapache-mod-auth-pam installed:
dpkg -l | grep apache
ii apache 1.3.34-4.1+etch1 versatile, high-performance HTTP server ii apache-common 1.3.34-4.1+etch1 support files for all Apache webservers ii apache2-utils 2.2.3-4+etch6 utility programs for webservers ii libapache-mod-auth-pam 1.1.1-10 Apache 1 module to authenticate web access u ii libapache-mod-php5 5.2.0-8+etch13 server-side, HTML-embedded scripting languag
nms-spk:~# dpkg -l | grep pam
ii libapache-mod-auth-pam 1.1.1-10 Apache 1 module to authenticate web access u ii libpam-modules 0.79-5 Pluggable Authentication Modules for PAM ii libpam-runtime 0.79-5 Runtime support for the PAM library ii libpam0g 0.79-5 Pluggable Authentication Modules library

The httpd.conf looks the same (expect servername).
The only difference between the installations is, that the first server uses amd64 kernel, the 2nd is using i686.

With the i686, PAM-Auth works fine. The amd64 always logs to error_log:
[Wed Jan 28 22:51:14 2009] [error] (25)Inappropriate ioctl for device: access to / failed for 192.168.208.1, reason: Authentication failure

After digging in the web, i found a workaround, but not a real solution.

They did a "chmod o+r /etc/shadow" ;-)
It worked for me too, but that can't be the final solution...

Does anybody know this problem or can give me an idea how to do further debugging/troubleshooting.

Thanks....
Regards,
Alex
