If not, then that's > probably causing problems. > > Lastly, try it with a different browser; that could be illuminating. > > -Brian > nope, no new illumination... and today it all works - maybe it's a cokroach in the XP box... wouldn't surprise me I rather suspect that what is happening is that somehow the OS (XP) is getting screwed up and just doesn't know what to do after it has been running some 7 or 8 hours working with FreeBSD as the server and accessing the web. I've seen other instances of stuff blocking locally or even on my Internet Provider... looks like it's just another anomaly to live with...
