As you said, this may be better pursued over the mod_ssl mailing list.
The problem is similar to the one described here:

if i can find the culprit cgi app, that may help. can enable duebug loggin in apache help?

I have not idea what is causing the problem, so I can't suggest a
work-around. You might have better luck on the mod_ssl mailing list,
although it seems pretty quite lately.
