Throughout, the file STATUS in each package is indicative of it's progress, but through the version control system this is made a little more clear. For example, http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/httpd/httpd/branches/1.3.x/STATUS?view=log http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/httpd/httpd/trunk/STATUS?view=log Versions are skipped for a host of reasons. The httpd project (originally a rag tag group of squatters on their own patches to NCSA web server, and later banded together as the Apache Group, and finally forming the Foundation and establishing the Apache httpd Project) has always held that once it's created, a version is what it is, and that version number is skipped if it turns out that assemblage of code isn't up to snuff. Fixes are applied and a new version number issued. If you are looking deeper into the historical strata, let me know and I'll see what we can do about providing you copies of the CVS trees of much older sources. Evolution wise, the transition from NCSA to Apache httpd 1.3 is rather interesting.
