Or, open_id membership type system.
open id being an open source version of MS' .net
passport / windows live [ or whatever it's called now
]

same principal as you want, as long as the person is
active there is no time out, they stop clicking links
there is a time out. [ I think it's set to 10 minutes
of no activity ]
just another thought. ;)
[ why reproduce the code when it's available? ]
