As I understand it a .war is simillar to a .jar in the sense that they're both basically zip files including a specific named file (MANIFEST or simillar). In this particular case, .war is a web application archive, and contains a standard directory layout for servlet class files and jsps and config files (yay xml) etc. All in all, it's not a bad way to distribute a webapp. Certain commercial webapps are just a single .war file that you can dump in Tomcat's webapps directory and go.
