AFAIK, it is mainly mod_mem_cache that is a bit flaky... mod_disk_cache
is quite stable (and, since any decent OS keeps popular disk files in
memory anyway, is just as fast as mem_cache).

I'd try it and see - I think the worst that can happen is that you see
no effect; ie, things don't get any better, they're unlikely to get
worse.
