I was thinking the cron job might be running as the wrong user myself ... -spc (But this is getting into the realm of OS issues, not Apache ... )

Thank you very much, guys, and sorry for disturbing.
I fixed the problem by adding the job to the 'root' user crontab
(I did it to an ordinary user crontab before).
