Thanks for the quick reply Owen, but I found the cause of this problem not long after I posted to the list (isn't that always the way?) Turned out GCC was using /usr/ccs/bin/ld which was a symlink to GNU ld. Removing the symlink and copying the Sun ld binary (which I have previously backed up) back into /usr/ccs/bin seems to have fixed this compile problem.
