Yes of course Owen  ... sorry... Apache loaded and continued to work fine on
port 80 -- but any attempts to browse to the secure subdirectory met with
the browser behaving just as it would upon "address not found").

Have you started apache with the -DSSL option?

Usually this means starting with:

apachectl startssl

another test you can do is

httpd -S

Have a look at the output. It ought to list your ssl virtual host.
