Weird... it looks like your apachectl shell-script is corrupted (the shell interpreter is not expanding the variables $HTTPD and $ARGV). How that happens because you edit httpd.conf is anybody's guess! [well... usually, these crazy things happen when you edit the files with something funny - you're not editing the config on a windows PC with Notepad and then FTPing it to Linux, are you? Or editing with StarOffice? Or some other odd thing...?]

Did you touch or edit apachectl when making this change?
what happens if you try to start httpd directly without using apachectl, ie:

	/usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -k start

(NB That's all that apachectl does :-)
