(In IE it's called 'Show pictures', in FF it's called 'Load images'). Did you accidentally turn this off? Next thing to do, if the above isn't true: Get livehttpheaders (for FF), or a comparable piece of software for IE (sorry, I hardly ever use IE...) to see if the request is sent, and what the headers of the reply look like.
