Okay, here we go again. I tried some modifications in error/HTTP_UNAUTHORIZED.html.var and error/include/top.html, so the header returns: HTTP/1.1 401 Authorization Required Date: Fri, 05 Aug 2005 09:03:58 GMT Server: Apache/2.0.49 (Linux/SuSE) WWW-Authenticate: Basic realm="Zugang zu den Arbeitsanweisungen M├Âbel" Vary: accept-language,accept-charset Accept-Ranges: bytes Transfer-Encoding: chunked Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 Content-Language: en The Error-Page is now in UTF-8, but the Problem is still there. The htaccess, htgroups and htpasswd will not be read in UTF-8. Any Ideas how we can solve this? Hi Bill! Thanks for the fast answer! I do a telnet like you said and this comes back: HTTP/1.1 401 Authorization Required Date: Thu, 04 Aug 2005 16:16:35 GMT Server: Apache/2.0.49 (Linux/SuSE) WWW-Authenticate: Basic realm="Zugang zu den Arbeitsanweisungen M÷bel" Vary: accept-language,accept-charset Accept-Ranges: bytes Transfer-Encoding: chunked Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Language: en Okay, the browser get the wrong charset, so it can't display the right char. How can I change the charset for the ErrorDocuments? But the Errordocument is not the only problem in this case. The htgroups and the htpasswd is read in ISO too. So user with special chars in there login (like ö,ä,ü) can't login. Which one does the password check, Apache or browser? Hans-Peter -----Original Message----- From: William A. Sniff the request with netcat or telnet, attempting to GET /file.html HTTP/1.1 Host: www.example.com presuming file.html is protected, see what comes back. Do you have your global utf8 charset set up, or set up to use utf8 for at least your 401 error document? If the content-type; ...; charset= is not utf8, that's your issue. If it is, I'm afraid Craig is right - it's an issue in the browser.
