Thanks Mike for all your help. It works perfectly. I really do appreciate your jumping in and helping me to solve this problem. Now all I have to do is go to: START | PROGRAMS | START APACHE or START | PROGRAMS | STOP APACHE . This is exactly what I wanted to be able to do!

Thanks again,
Alan

Yes Mike this is what I need. However I could not figure out how to create a shortcut to put into my menu. Let me re-iterate: I know how to create shortcuts but when I try to enter this target ("C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache\Apache.exe -w -n "Apache" -k start") into my shortcut it won't accept it as a valid path. However, when I enter it using a DOS window I can turn on and off the server. So I guess I need a short tutorial on how to take "C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache\Apache.exe -w -n "Apache" -k start" and turn it into a working shortcut.

1. Delete the double-quote after the word start (above)

2. Insert a double-quote after the word Apache.exe (above)

You need double quotes around the location of the executable because it has space in the directory name.

I just installed Apache 1.3 on my Windows 2000 machine. Apache is running in the background. How do I find the control panel so I can turn apache?

I don't think 1.3 comes with the same doodads as Apache2. I think you are looking for shortcuts to start, stop and restart Apache. If so, you need three shortcut targets like this ...

  C:\apache\Apache\bin\Apache.exe -w -n "Apache" -k restart
(other two with start, stop instead of restart)

... with a Start in value like this ...

  C:\apache\Apache

Copy or move those three shortcuts to ...

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Apache HTTP Server
