I hope that I'm posting this to the proper group. I
had installed Apache 2.0.53 on my XPpro box with PHP &
MySQL and had Apache working flawlessly. I
uninstalled it and since then, every attempt to
reinstall has been met with an Apache that will not
work

I too did this with AFAIR same results. I got it working by deleting the apache directories afer uninstalling. Re-install then worked well.

(even though it appears to be working fine in the
system tray in that it starts, stops, restarts, etc;
just fine and for all intents and purposes, *appears*
to be working.
When you type http://localhost in the address bar of
either of the browsers where it worked before, it will
not work (times out, could not find page, etc. Netstat shows it sometimes but not sometimes as being
active even though it's in the system tray as being
active and netstat shows as listening to 127.0.0.1:80
even though httpd.conf is set to 'Listen 80'.

In frustration, I installed Apache ver 1.33 and it
worked great with the exception of not having an
indicator in my system tray and what I thought might
be an issue with my phpMyAdmin so I uninstalled it in
hopes of getting Apache 2 going. Later only to find
out that Apache 1.33 will not re-install properly
either.

This is interesting to note in that both versions of
Apache installed flawlessly and ran flawlessly with
all of my other software running (firewall, virus
software, etc etc) and though I've gone to great pains
to shut this off, uninstall that prior to reinstalling
Apache, nothing has worked so my friends, DO NOT EVER
uninstall Apache from the box you presently have it
installed on because you will very likely not get it
running again.

At any rate, I recently had the good fortune of
corresponding with a fellow who appears to understand
Apache quite well. He gave me several ideas of which
I tried and nothing seemed to work. Hopefully others
can help who may have had this experience. My error
log WAS NOT this way with the initial installation but
now is filled with lines related to
Win32DisableAcceptEx (I noted several other people on
the net in various groups trying to overcome similar
symptoms but never saw a 'fix'), though when I have
installed this line at the end of my httpd.conf file,
it has not helped and rather, has *seemed* to have
been associated with my inability to see Apache as
running in Netstat.

A long first post, eh? :-) Any help or additional
thoughts on this whole subject will be greatly
appreciated. I HAVE to think at this point that
something in the Apache uninstaller has been haunting
me but am not sure and hope to get past this
experience.

Best,

John
