I am using mod_php. I do not have any special directives, but in my php.ini I have display_errors off (I put it on briefly to see if I would see anything), and I have errors logged to /var/log/apache2/php_errors.log . I would be interested in how you are doing this. I can send my virtual host if that would be of any use here. If not in the error_log file where should I see a log of the 500 response?
