PHP fans everywhere will discourage you from this now.  Please try out the
PHP fcgi sapi and mod_fcgid, which should be released within a day or two.
(Hint, we keep candidates for release in http://httpd.apache.org/dev/dist/ ).

Lots of fastcgi php getting started articles out there, make sure you find
one which refers to php 5.4 or 5.3, and mod_fcgid specifically, not the
older fast cgi modules for httpd.
