I don't think most people on this listserv want to get a bunch of emails li= ke this, so this will be my last one.=0A=0AHow you gleamed that the central= message of my last email was "It's not clear," I'm not sure.=0A=0AWhat I s= aid is that the son is clearly speaking with his father's consent, and even= in the short bit we have, Daddy ATC is right there, elaborating on what hi= s son said, also speaking to the pilots, joking with them briefly that "thi= s is what you get when the kids are off from school." The only thing I said= wasn't clear is how much MORE of this kind of dialogue he might have kept = up. Even with the limited clip we do have, what is clear is that the ATC wa= s in charge.=0A=0A=0A=0A----- Original Message ----=0AFrom: RWM <RWM@RWMann= .com>=0ATo: The Airline List <AIRLINE@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>; Brett Fechheimer = <brettfechh@xxxxxxxxx>=0ASent: Thu, March 4, 2010 6:56:32 PM=0ASubject: Re:= NYTimes.com: Investigating Tiny Voices at Air Tower=0A=0AAs you say, it's = not clear. =0AGiven the industry focus on precision, that's the issue.=0A= =0A=0A=0ABrett Fechheimer wrote:=0A>>> Why accept the clearance unchallenge= d?=0A>>>=A0 =A0 =A0 =0A> =0A> We don't actually have the full recordings, j= ust the bit originally put up on LiveATC.net (and since distributed virally= by our trusted media), which lasts not much longer than a minute -- and ev= en during that minute, the ATC is heard just as much, or more, as his son. = In other words, the kid's words didn't occur in a vacuum; his father spoke = immediately before and after his son did, every time, and we have no idea i= f just before the recording started the ATC prepped the pilots even more ex= plicitly about what was going on (or if he continued to do so throughout; i= t's not clear how extensively the recording was edited or what was left out= ).
