DAYTONA BEACH - A Spirit Airlines jet carrying 128 passengers was
diverted to Daytona Beach International Airport this afternoon after
smoke was reported in the cockpit and cabin, airport officials said.

The Airbus landed at Daytona Beach International Airport at 1:25 p.m,
said airport spokesman Steve Cooke. Three passengers were taken to
Halifax Health Medical Center by ambulance, after suffering smoke
inhalation, said EVAC spokesman Mark O'Keefe.

The plane, which now is at Gate 6, was flying from Chicago to Fort
Lauderdale when smoke was reported, Cooke said. Officials are still
trying to determine what caused the smoke in the cabin.

Paramedics are on hand in case other passengers need medical attention
or have to be transported to the hospital, O'Keefe said.

Cooke said Spirit is sending another plane to pick up the passengers
and take them on to Fort Lauderdale.
