Rising fuel costs spark fare increases
Newsday

Dallas -- Blaming soaring fuel costs, Southwest Airlines raised ticket
prices over the weekend -- a move that was quickly matched by seven other
carriers.
Southwest raised one-way fares by $10 on flights longer than 1,000 miles
and $3 on flights of 751 miles to 1,000 miles. Shorter flights were not
affected.
Southwest spokeswoman Paula Berg said the airline expects its fuel bill =
to
be $800 million higher this year than last year's $1.3 billion. Aviation
fuel is about $2.05 to $2.10 a gallon. In 2001, it was $1.
Southwest's increases, which took effect Friday evening, were matched by
American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Northwest Airlines,
Continental Airlines, AirTran Airways and Frontier Airlines. --------------=
