Re: New York-Area Airports Little Affected By Transit Strike

For everyone's information -- a "motorman" for NYC MTA starts at better than DOUBLE the starting salary for an NYPD cadet. So this is not about New York beating up on the working class, this is a true imbalance in the compensation of public servants. Or at least many of us seem to think so.

Sadly, the Mayor does not have the authority and the Governor is not inclined to jump ahead of the courts.

This "breakaway local" union (the "local" Union has defied an order from it's parent "Int'l" Union) seems to have enraged the city through it's poor public relations, rather than garnering support.

Our cops are poorly paid and respect the fact that they have no right to strike. It's part of their choice of career: you need to eat, but you don't SUSPEND PUBLIC SAFETY under any circumstances. That's the opposite reason of why you joined up.

I say let these transit folk take a look at the plight of airline mechanics -- a group directly involved in public safety who have seen pensions evaporate, salaries tumble, and their younger coworkers relegated to B-scale.
