Virgin America seeks permission to fly in US

WASHINGTON, Dec 8 (Reuters) - British entrepreneur Richard Branson's Virgin America Inc. sought permission on Thursday to start a domestic airline serving the United States, the company said.
Virgin America, which filed an application for certification with the U.S. Transportation Department, also said it has secured $177.3 million in financing from private investors.
Branson runs Virgin Atlantic Airways [VA.UL].
