ITA's model is different that the "standard" GDS model, indeed. But some legacy GDSs have migrated and/or are migrating their fare inventory out of ancient machines and into brand new boxes with substantially greater ability to scan across millions of options in seconds. The "open systems" seach over a true GDS will be a standard within a very short time -- just in time for the true effects of GDS deregulation to hit the industry. A "Wild West" scenario as seen at the beginning of airline deregulation can be seen taking shape. Much like Google's search technology, ITA basically runs through all the permutations and combinations of all the possible physical connections that can be made. As a result, it can catch and will display a sweet fare between say SEA and OMA by pairing a promo fare SEA<->BOI and BOI<->OMA. Most standard GDS' will look for fares SEA<->OMA and price on that basis. Though a good travel agent can come close to the suggestions made by ITA.
