Northwest Airlines orders 8 new Airbus A330 planes

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, Jan 26 (AFP) -
Northwest Airlines said Wednesday it had ordered eight Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft as part of a program to replace its older DC-10 planes.

The amount of the transaction was not disclosed.

The A330s will fly international routes and will replace the DC-10s in Northwest's fleet beginning in 2006 and continuing through 2007.

The order includes six of the A330-300 series, configured with 34 seats in business class and 264 seats in coach, and two of the longer-range A330-200 series planes, with 32 seats in business class and 211 in coach class.

Northwest, which claims to be the world's fourth largest carrier, currently operates 15 of the A330 aircraft.
