Well, first off, the A330 is not a direct competitor to the 777, the A340 is.
 Yes, the A330 has outsold the 767 (its more proper competitor) in recent
years, but has not sold as many over its life (which seems to be fast coming to
an end because of the A350/7E7 war).  This is mainly due to the cargo carrying
ability of the A330 as compares to the 767.  Boeing has recieved 642 orders
for the 777 (compared to 352 for all A340s, even though the A340 is an older
model), including 81 and growing for the 773ER and 772LR, which have been around
for 5 fewer years than the A345/A346.  That is about 80% of the orders, in
much less time.  I really don't see how the 777 is being outsold by anything when
the 2 planes that were built to compete with it, A340 and MD-11, have sold
fewer PAX models combined than the 777.
