United Air To Charge Fees On Bookings Outside Web >UALAQ

Wednesday September 8, 6:16 PM EDT

CHICAGO (Dow Jones)--UAL Corp.'s (UALAQ) United Airlines will join a
growing list of carriers by adding a fee to tickets purchased at U.S.
airport ticket offices and through United reservations offices for calls
originating in the U.S. and Canada.

In a press release Wednesday, the carrier said it will add a $10 fee to
tickets purchased at airport ticket counters and a $5 fee to tickets
purchased through United reservations offices.

There won't be any fees on tickets sold through the company's Web site.

United's fees, which are effective Thursday, apply to domestic and
international tickets sold through United reservations centers and U.S.
airport ticket offices.

The changes are expected to generate "significant" savings for the
company, which is working to lower its costs as part of its ongoing
restructuring efforts.

A spokeswoman wasn't immediately able to say how much the company
expects to save.

Earlier Wednesday, Continental Airlines Inc. (CAL) said it would begin
charging fees when tickets are booked via its reservations centers or
airport ticket counters in the U.S.

Similar fees were recently adopted at US Airways Group Inc. (UAIR), AMR
Corp.'s (AMR) American Airlines and Northwest Airlines Corp. (NWAC).
