Great for non-rev's (airline employees traveling space available)
JAL was legendary, flying for years  SFO-HNL-TYO with no traffic rights from
SFO to Hawaii so usually 200 empty seats on that leg and was always filled
with airline staff.
Qantas also had a similar situation and very popular with pass riders

Swissair (and many other European carriers ) flew Chicago ORD / Boston BOS/
ZRH with no local traffic on the ORD BOS  v.v. leg.  Guarenteed space for
employees and filled with UAL and AAL workers who couldnt get seats on their own
carriers.
