Manhattan transfer as New York flights begin=20



THE first direct flight from Edinburgh to New York was taking off today.


Continental Airlines has launched daily flights to Newark New Jersey
Airport, which serves New York.=20

Fares range from =A3190 in the winter up to =A3440 in the summer, and
Continental expects to carry more than 75,000 passengers during the
first year. The route is expected to boost tourism and business from
America to Edinburgh as well as allowing more people from the Capital to
visit New York.=20

The new Continental Airlines service takes about seven hours to make the
3250-mile trip to Newark, New Jersey.=20

The launch of the flight has been accompanied by a high-profile
advertising campaign in the Capital with slogans including "From the
Forth Bridges to Fifth Avenue".=20

Funding from the Scottish Executive=92s Route Development Fund helped =
get
the service established.=20

Transport Minister Nicol Stephen said today: "The USA remains the
powerhouse of the global economy and better connections will give
Scotland a competitive advantage.=20

"Edinburgh is now one of Europe=92s largest financial centres and this =
new
route connects Scotland=92s capital directly to the world=92s financial
capital. Scotland=92s leading banks are now major players in North =
America
and another link to Wall Street can only strengthen our global
businesses.=20

"The service also offers a fantastic opportunity for our tourism
industry. There is huge interest in Scotland across North America and
with improved promotion as part of this new route the potential is very
significant."
