Tons of trouble?  If he and his friend board together they'll most likely
find two seats together.  I've never had a problem finding three seats together
on Southwest flights so two should be significantly easier.

Isn't a line of people marching down the jetbridge to get on a flight the
same cattle car operation no matter if it's United or Southwest?  Or does the
fact you're usually paying more on United make you feel more comfortable when
boarding?   Doesn't United board by row numbers or is it totally at your leisure?
 Really, how much different is it than Southwest lining people up in groups
to board?
