I think it's only the gate clearance -- my understanding was that with the existing 747 gates (expanded way-back-then) that the A380 would have a mere 18" (18 inches) clearance off either wingtip.  That, apparently, requires a highly precise bit of tug work.  Possibly LH thinks it's a bit too tight... in an emergency you could always walk people off the tarmac, at Gander, Rekyavik, etc...
