China Southern, based in the mainland city of Guangzhou, said in a public statement that its board of directors has given "in-principle approval" for the purchase of 15 A320-200 and six A319-100 aircraft. Chinese President Hu Jintao first announced the purchase from Airbus during his French tour last week. The company did not disclose the financial details of the deal and it was not immediately clear when the jets were to be delivered. China Southern also said it has signed a final agreement with Brazil's Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica SA, better known as Embraer, for the purchase of six smaller, regional jets. The EMB-145LR model jets will be paid for in cash and delivered in stages through 2004 and 2005, the company said.
