China Southern Airlines to buy 21 jets from Airbus and six from Embraer

   (02-01) 18:22 PST HONG KONG (AP) --
China Southern Airlines Co. said Monday it plans to buy 21 aircraft from
the European consortium Airbus and six from a Brazilian manufacturer.
China Southern, based in the mainland city of Guangzhou, said in a public
statement that its board of directors has given "in-principle approval"
for the purchase of 15 A320-200 and six A319-100 aircraft. Chinese
President Hu Jintao first announced the purchase from Airbus during his
French tour last week.
The company did not disclose the financial details of the deal and it was
not immediately clear when the jets were to be delivered.
China Southern also said it has signed a final agreement with Brazil's
Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica SA, better known as Embraer, for the
purchase of six smaller, regional jets.
The EMB-145LR model jets will be paid for in cash and delivered in stages
through 2004 and 2005, the company said. The list price of the Embraer
jets is $20.1 million each.
